Most dialysis patients are medically eligible for home dialysis — PD or home HD — but candidacy also depends on home suitability, a care partner (for home HD), training capacity, and personal capability. This guide maps the criteria and how to find out if you qualify.
PD requires an intact peritoneal cavity — prior major abdominal surgery, hernias, or adhesions can be barriers, and body size and psychosocial capability are assessed. Home HD has fewer absolute medical barriers, but a dedicated space, water/power, and a trained care partner are expected.
