What is the difference between yellow and red category waste?

Yellow category: infectious waste (human tissues, soiled dressings, microbiological cultures), discarded medicines, and cytotoxic drugs. Red category: recyclable contaminated waste (IV tubes, catheters, urine bags, gloves, empty blood bags). Yellow waste goes to incineration or deep burial. Red waste goes to authorized recycling after autoclaving or microwaving.

Can dialysis fluid/effluent go down the drain?

Dialysate effluent (spent dialysate) is considered non-hazardous wastewater and can be discharged to the sanitary sewer system — it does not require BMW category treatment. However, dialysate from HBV-positive patients: some state PCB guidelines require decontamination before drain disposal. Check your state's specific healthcare wastewater guidelines.

How often should waste-handling staff be trained?

BMW Rules require that all healthcare facility staff handling BMW receive initial training at the time of joining and annual refresher training. NABH FMS requires documented training records with pre- and post-training competency assessment. Attendance, assessment scores, and corrective training for scores <80% must be documented.
