What creatinine values mean at different ages and CKD stages — a reference chart with the eGFR translation, and when a single number is misleading.

Creatinine alone is a rough filter — a 'normal' value varies with age, sex, and muscle mass. The staging number is eGFR, which converts creatinine (with age and sex) into a filtration estimate. This guide explains what creatinine values mean and why eGFR is the number to track.
Adult reference ranges are roughly 0.7-1.3 mg/dL, but muscular build, age, and sex shift the 'normal' — a value that's fine for a young athletic man can be elevated for a small older woman. Reference ranges printed on lab reports are population averages, not your personal baseline.
The better framing: compare against YOUR baseline. A rise of 0.3 mg/dL or a jump of 1.5× from your usual value is a red flag even if the absolute number looks 'in range.'
eGFR (CKD-EPI 2021) converts creatinine with age and sex into mL/min/1.73m² — the number that stages CKD (G1 ≥90 down to G5 <15). A creatinine of 1.3 mg/dL in a 30-year-old and a 75-year-old translate to very different eGFR values.
Staging also uses albuminuria (UACR) — the heat-map combines eGFR (G) and albuminuria (A). Use the eGFR calculator for the conversion and the CKD stage checker for the full classification.
Creatinine reflects muscle turnover, so heavy exercise, creatine supplements, and a large meat meal raise it without meaning the kidneys changed. Conversely, low muscle mass can hide real kidney decline behind a 'normal' creatinine.
That's why trends over time, eGFR, and urine albumin matter more than any single number — and why cystatin C exists as a muscle-independent check when the creatinine picture is unclear.
